Therefore, it is advised that you must consider the following important things so that you can get the best deal with full peace of mind.

1.     Understand the Difference Between Second hand and Refurbished Phones

In electronic devices, refurbished is a common word and you have heard it many times. Refurbished phones mean that the used phones which are refurbished and then they are available for reselling. However, second hand phones don’t experience any refurbishment and usually sold as it is.

4.     Check IMEI to Ensure The Phone is Not Blacklisted

The IMEI is a code that identifies each mobile phone. No two phones have the same IMEI number and manufacturing companies use this number to verify stolen or lost phones. Therefore, you must ask it from the seller and make sure the phone is not blacklisted. Keep in mind a blacklisted phone can’t be activated for further use.

5.     Closely Inspect the Exterior

The step is rather simple should provide you an idea of how old the phone is. Wear and tear will occur during its initial run. So, be sure that the condition is what you expect to pay for. You should see the original photos of the phone and read the product description carefully in case of online purchase.

Therefore, you should make sure the screen is clear and not have any scratch or signs of damage.

7.     Ensure the Phone Battery Performance

Batteries drop in performance as they age. That’s why you should consider these questions; does it easily drains after some few activities on the phone? Or are they still working well? This point is hard to check and the best solution is to get a phone with a replaced battery or to get a personal warranty from the seller so that you can test the battery life later.

8.     Inquire About the Warranty

Ask the seller for a personal warranty apart from the manufacturer’s warranty. This way you will know that the phone is indeed authentic, is in good running condition, and is worth buying for the price being offered. Don’t forget to inquire about the manufacturer’s warranty. If it is still covered then it is good for you.

9.     Check the Phone’s Features

Above everything else, you want a fully functional and feature-rich used mobile phone. You don’t want a slightly used looking mobile phone that’s good in the outside but faulty on the inside. So, you should check each feature and function of the phone and make sure they work properly. Read out complete product details and reviews on the seller’s site.

10. Prefer an Unlocked Phone

If you want to use your phone without any carrier’s restrictions then you should look for an unlocked mobile phone. With an unlocked phone, you will be able to use any network services of your choice. Conversely, with a locked phone, you are restricted to a specific carrier’s service.

11. Check The Accessories Along with Phone

If you are buying a second hand mobile phone, make sure you get all necessary accessories such as charger, headphones, USB cable and more along with it. As well, you should also check that these accessories are fully functional and not having any issues.

12. Ensure There is No Water Damage

While buying a used mobile phone, you should also confirm that the phone never gets any water damage experience. Such kinds of serious issues can hurt the touchscreen functionality, or in some severe cases, it makes the device useless. Therefore, you must consider it at the time of purchase of a second hand phone.

13. Check the Storage Capacity

Second hand or refurbished mobile phones also come with different storage capacities. You can choose a storage capacity according to your needs. Remember the prices are also different according to the storage capacity of the mobile phones; low capacity phones are quite cheaper than the large ones.

14. Shipping

Boom of Second-hand phone market in UK
Boom of Second-hand phone market in UK

The United Kingdom has one of the biggest mobile-phone markets in the world. The ever growing population of the UK is one of the factor behind this increased market share. People are always opting for better smartphones that can help them in various aspects of life. That is the sole reason that people these days in the UK are going for second-hand or pre-owned mobile phones. We will include the reasons behind this boom in the second-hand phone market in the UK and why people are buying used phones later in this article.

Do you have the latest smartphone? Can you afford a brand new or latest smartphone? These are the two questions that everyone should ask from themselves before upgrading their device. By looking at living conditions in the UK it can be deduced that people are now smart and they are aware of prioritizing their needs. Back in early 2000s, when smartphones came into existence, people went gaga over buying the latest models in the market as soon as they were launched. But as the time passed, people became more aware of the high prices of the latest smartphones. But still some companies are selling their phones on high prices by their Outbound Marketing.

Below, there are some of the reasons behind the boom of second-hand phone market in the UK:

1.      High prices of new smart phones:

Apple has the biggest market share in the UK, when it comes to the smartphone industry. People are buying Apple devices as they are user friendly andmuch more. But these days, the phones that Apple is launching are too expensive to be bought by rational consumers. The biggest example that we can take here is that; back in 2007 when iPhone 1 was launched, the launching price of that smartphone was £499. Contrary to this, the latest iPhone XS and XS Max’s launching prices were £999 and £1,099 respectively.

You can see 100% raise in the launching price of iPhone in just 11 years. This raise in the launching price has awakened the people, and they are now prioritizing their needs. Buying an iPhone worth more than a thousand pounds sterling is not observed as an intelligent decision by people.

This is the most important reason that has encouraged the people to buy used phones.

2.      Less innovation in new smartphones:

Apple is launching new phones every year, but these phones aren’t worth it if we look at the innovation aspect. No doubt that Apple provided us with some innovation last year with the infinity display of iPhone X, but other than that, iPhone X had almost the same features as iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.

Let us provide you with a simple comparison between the features of iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X and the latest iPhone XS;

  • Colour Scheme: The colour scheme of iPhones have been consistent since iPhone 5S. iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X and iPhone XS all come in silver, space grey and gold colours. So, we are still waiting for some fun colours to be added by Apple to their iPhones rather than these three colours.
  • LCD: LCD is one of the biggest factors why iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X are different. Yes, that is one of the innovation that iPhone provided its users with. iPhone 8 Plus have 5.5” retina HD display while iPhone X has 5.8” super retina HD display.
Apple did that right! But if, on the other hand, we compare the LCD’s of iPhone X and XS, they both are same and the price difference between these two is huge.
  • Camera: The rear cameras of all these devices are same i.e. Dual 12MP wide-angle and telephoto cameras. So why should people buy iPhone XS when it has the same camera as iPhone 8?
The front camera of all these models is also the same i.e. 7MP TrueDepth camera.
  • Security: iPhone 8 plus has the touch id (fingerprint sensor) through which you can unlock your iPhone from your finger prints. Apple introduced the feature of face recognition in iPhone X but unfortunately this overly hyped feature failed to work and impress the people even at the launch of iPhone X last year.
Although, Apple has improved this feature in iPhone XS. But this feature hadn’t had much of an impact on people in the UK, as they can easily and quickly unlock their phones with their fingers as compared to the failed attempts to unlock their device with their faces.
  • Water Resistance: Well when apple introduced the feature of water resistance in iPhone 7; that was a big innovation indeed! After that in iPhone 8, iPhone X and iPhone XS Apple has given the same feature, the only difference is that iPhone 8 and iPhone X are water resistant up to 1m depth for 30 minutes, while iPhone XS is water resistant up to 2m depth for 30 minutes.
That is a difference of 1m depth but unfortunately that’s not an innovation by Apple.
  • Charging: All of the three devices have the same mode of charging. Although the battery life is made better by Apple in each of these models.
  • Dual SIM: introducing dual SIM compatible iPhone XS was not an innovation at all. There are many other mobile phone companies that offered dual SIM feature way before it was launched in iPhone XS.

We can see from this brief comparison that the most popular phone in the UK “iPhone” is offering as such no great innovation for the people in its latest models. And on the other hand the prices of the latest models of iPhone are even crossing thousand pound sterling. So, this is clear that one can easily purchase a second hand iPhone 8 plus or even an iPhone 7 plus at much lower price than the latest one and can enjoy the same features.

Not only Apple, the other major competitors i.e. Samsung, Huawei, etc. are also doing the same thing every year. People these days in the UK are much intelligent and smart, and they are surely smarter than these latest smartphones. That is the major reason that people are opting for less costly second hand phones these days in the UK.

3.      Expensive accessories and parts:

Yes, the accessories for the latest phones are also very expensive. Let it be the phone’s cover, or a compatible charger, etc. The accessories of the expensive latest models of mobile phones are also very expensive. So it’s not just a one-time expense for buying the latest model, the list of expenses for that expensive phone goes on. Contrary to this, the accessories of the older models are comparatively cheaper and affordable.

There are many devices which help the users in using a smartphone these days. One such device is a smart watch. Smart watch helps people in various ways and it has made lives of the people easier. People want to buy these watches, but if they spend their whole month’s salary on the expensive latest smartphone, how would they afford a smart watch then? As discussed previously, people these days are smarter when taking such decisions. People in the UK are buying cheaper second hand phones, so that they can afford the other helping devices as well with their smartphones while being in their limited yet smart budget.

With all of this, the repairing costs of the latest models are also too high. As smartphones are becoming popular, people are taking less care of their phones. That is why every other person we know has a phone with a broken LCD. The parts and the repairing costs of the latest models are very expensive as compared to the parts of the older models. So, people in UK are going for second hand phones to afford the repair prices if they accidentally break their phone, as they can reliably be delivered by a domestic or international courier service.

Discussed above are some of the major reasons that people these days are giving more attention to buy used phones rather than going for the latest models. We at AlphaSmartPhones, also think that buying a used phone is an intelligent decision. The statistics of sales of the best-selling phone in the UK “iPhone” clearly shows a downfall in the recent years. The growth rate in the purchase of iPhones was steady from 2011 to 2014, i.e. approx. 15% each year. But it raised to approx.18% when iPhone 6s was launched, as people in the UK saw the innovation in that phone, but after that the growth in purchase of iPhone in the UK fell drastically, and in 2017 the growth rate surprisingly fell to a mere 2.7%.

These statistics act as a proof that people are not buying the latest smartphones now. The major reasons behind this decision by people in the UK are discussed briefly in this article.

How to Check How Old Your Phone is?
How to Check How Old Your Phone is?

Everyone owns a smartphone in today’s era, but have you ever wondered that how old your phone is? Yes, our phones also have age, we can check the age of our smartphone through some simple steps. We always care about purchasing good second hand or refurbished mobile phones, so that we can get all of the specifications that we want in limited budget. But beware! When purchasing a second hand phone, you should always consider the age of the smartphone. Age of the smartphone is always directly proportional to the performance of that specific set.

We will be sharing the advantages of purchasing less aged phones and also the ways to check the age of a phone later in this article. But first, let us see what does the age of a specific phone means!

By age of the specific smartphone, we mean that what is the exact manufacturing date of the smartphone. We all know the launching dates of the specific smartphones, but what we really don’t know that every phone is not manufactured on the specific manufacturing date. The smartphones are manufactured until a specific period of time till a new model comes in the market. So getting to know the exact date of manufacture of the phone is really important for you.

Below are some of the advantages of having a less aged phone:

1.      Performance:

The first and the foremost aspect of having a less aged smartphone is its performance. The performance of the less aged smartphone would always be better than the performance of the more aged one. The problem that lies here is the agedness of the components used in the mobile phones.

The mobile phones that we use are composed of different materials and they are built up of different small components. Many of these components wear off with the time. Let it be the components used in the mother board of the phone or the LCD. The performance of phone always goes down with time.

2.      Battery Life:

The second most important aspect is regarding the battery life of the smartphones. The battery life of the smartphones really depends upon the age of the smartphones. Although it also depends on other factors as well, like the charging habits of the previous user, etc. But the thing that always worsen the battery life of a smartphone is the age of that phone. With periodic charging for a long time, your device’s battery wore offs.

3.      Body:

Yes, the good body conditions are usually another advantage of having a less aged smartphone. The body of the smartphones are usually made up of aluminium and plastic. These two materials wore off not so quickly though, but these can wore off a little bit with to time. Body of the phone almost remains the same with time if it’s used properly.

But we really don’t know about the previous owner of the phone, and how he used the device. More aged the device is, more chances of it being damaged! There are certain things that can be pointed out at first site as broken, whenever we have a look at any phone e.g. display, sides, etc. But there are certain things that we cannot point out so easily, these things include the insides of a mobile phone. The material used in smartphones can be damaged if the phone is too old.

Now that you know the advantages of having a newer phone, we would let you know about how to check the age of your phone or any phone around you!

1.      Box Of The Phone:

The first and foremost thing that you should check is the box of your phone. Some mobile manufacturing companies usually put the manufacturing date of each mobile phone on its box. You can easily find the manufacturing date on the back side of the box. If you look at the back of the box of your phone, you will find a white sticker having quite a few words, symbols, digits and bar codes.

On this white sticker you might also find the manufacturing date of the smartphone. Manufacturing date is usually found under the bar codes on the sticker. To confirm the date, if you purchased a second hand phone, you must crosscheck the IMEI number written on the box and in the settings of your phone to confirm if the box is actually of your phone or not. If the IMEI number doesn’t match, then unfortunately the date on the box isn’t the true manufacturing date of your phone. In this case you would have to find the manufacturing date from some other method.

2.      Settings:

In some phones you might find the manufacturing date of your device in the settings app. The location where the manufacturing date might have been written varies though in every device. You would have to spend some time finding it.

The manufacturing date can be usually found in the “About Phone” tab in settings. You can search the manufacturing date in that, but in some phone the manufacturing date isn’t written straight away. You have to apply certain formulas to get the manufacturing date of your phone.

One such example is of Apple iPhones. You might find the manufacturing dates of iPhones in their serial numbers. The serial numbers are clearly shown in the About Phone part in setting of iPhones. The third digit of the serial number usually expresses about the manufacturing year e.g. 4 means 2014, 6 means 2016, and so on. Moreover, the fourth digit usually denotes the specific week of the year in which the iPhone was manufactured.

So, in iPhone’s case you would have to be much vigilant to find its manufacturing date. Or the simpler way is to search on Google. Just write the make and model of your phone and the serial number of your mobile phone. Usually the OEMs give this facility to the mobile phone owners to know about the history of their devices.

3.      Applications:

There are certain applications on Play Store that might help you in finding the age of your mobile phone. One of such app available on Play Store is “Phone info *Samsung*”, this app usually works for the Samsung’s manufactured smart phones. To find the manufacturing date of your phone, you simply have to download the application on your Samsung smartphone. When you open it, go to the “general” tab. You find the date of manufacturing of your Samsung phone there written e.g. 2016.03.01.

But this application is only tested on Samsung smartphone. You would have to check if the other manufacturer’s info apps show the manufacturing date of those phones or not.

4.      Manufacturing Codes:

Yes, if you know the manufacturing code of your smartphone, you might be able to find the manufacturing date of your smartphone. We used the word ‘might’ as manufacturing codes are usually not just OEM specific, they might be also model specific.

But you can try by entering ‘*#manufacturingcode#* or *#*#manufacturingcode#*#* into the dialler pad of your smartphone. Through this the service menu would be opened. You can easily check the manufacturing date of your smartphone through this.

If this doesn’t work as well, you would then have to look for the specific manufacturing code of your phone through Google and try to do this again.

Now that you know the way of checking the manufacturing date of your phone, and that you also know the benefits of having a less aged phone, you can be more careful when buying a second hand phone. At Alpha Smartphones, we have a wide range of Android phones and iPhones for sale. You can easily buy a less aged second-hand smartphone from us and make your life easier.

4 Major Differences Between Used and Refurbished Phones
4 Major Differences Between Used and Refurbished Phones

The idea of using refurbished phones can either have you excited with all the possibilities that it offers or have you sulking, thinking about using a used mobile phone that is probably on its deathbed.Even though in the mind of a common person, “refurbished” and “used” are very often interchangeable, they are not the same at all. Saying that a phone is refurbished is not the same a saying it is, while both of them are not brand new there are significant differences that set one apart from the other.

How is a refurbished phone different from a used mobile phone?

The basic difference lies in the retouching of the mobile phone. A used phone is sold as it is brought to the vendor, there are no changes made whatsoever. But when a phone is refurbished, it is inspected for all the faults and defects that are then fixed before the phone is sold to the customer. With this reconditioning the phone is reset to a new-like condition, which cannot be said about a simply used phone.

Following are a few of the major differences between a refurbished and a used phone.

1. Physical Condition

A used mobile phone is brought to a vendor in a certain condition, it can be good as new or bad as scrap. After the vendor acquires the phone, it is then sold to the customer in that very condition, there is no retouching, no replacement and no update of any kind. More often than not it is not very ideal, there are untouched defects and problems that led to the first owner selling it in the first place. Given that it is not always the case, a phone may very well be in a mint condition when it is acquired by the vendor, but it is still true for the majority of the used phones.

A refurbished phone however is different. As already mentioned above, after the phone is acquired by the vendor, it is then fixed, which includes the physical condition as well. It is keenly inspected, all the flaws are outlined and the phone is reconditioned that usually includes replacing the screen, any buttons that have been rendered useless, etc. Before it is sold to the new customer, it is restored to the best of its condition. It is made almost as good as a new one, inside out.

2. Warranty

One of the major reasons that someone ends up selling their phone is because of the defects and the cost to repair these defects are not worth it. That usually happens when problems start showing up after the warranty has expired, and the dues are no longer covered.

When the phones are sold as they are, their warranty has expired. And because they are not reconditioned, the defects and glitches are still present in the device. When they do come up in the later use, there is no warranty to cover the costs even by the vendor who sold the used mobile phone.

In a refurbished phone, however, the case is slightly different. All the problems are fixed before the sale is made. Because a phone that is refurbished is near-like new, therefore there are no faults expected. That’s why the vendor provides a warranty with the phone that has been refurbished, the kind of warranty may differ from one vendor than the other. In that period the customer can get any issue fixed if it arises. If a vendor is not offering a warranty, then it is very likely that the phone being sold is used and not refurbished.

3. Vendors

The chances of the original equipment manufacturer to sell any used mobile phones are very slim. There are however instances where they are found to be reselling their devices. This usually happens in a scenario where the items are sold “off-lease” in a great amount to a certain corporate customer who then returns the devices when the lease ends. Even in such a case, the resale is extremely rare owing to the fact that the phones are usually very old by the time they are returned and the OEM prefers to liquidate them instead of going to the trouble of resale.

They do sell refurbished phones. So if you want to buy a used phone then third-party vendors are most certainly the only choice for it. As for the refurbished ones, it is best to buy it from the original equipment or a very trusted third-party vendor. It often happens that vendors sell used phones claiming that they have been refurbished, therefore it is important to make sure about the authenticity of the vendor before making the purchase. Especially if there is no warranty offered, then the red flags should go up at once, because it is most likely used and not refurbished.

4. Age

The phones that have run out their course are more likely to not get the chance to be refurbished. But if the particular phone is still available somehow then there is a greater chance to find it refurbished, as good as new and with a warranty too. But if due to the age of the phone, it has been cut off by the original equipment manufacturer then the chances of finding a refurbished phone goes significantly low, almost to none. In such a case you are more likely to find used mobile phones in abundance.

The best way to check whether you can find your desired phone refurbished to take a quick scan of the OEM’s website. If you can find the phone listed on the website as new, then it is most probably still available as refurbished. However, if you are unable to locate it then it is most likely discontinued.

There is a transition period, in which the phones are still available as refurbished even after being discontinued, this can go from months to even years. But after this period ends, it becomes a used-only zone.

The first iPhone was launched way back in 2007. Since then, every year new models of iPhone are being launched by Apple. If you want to purchase a second hand iPhone in reasonable prices and having almost all the features of the latest ones, then you would have the options below:

     iPhone 7:

iPhone 7 was released in 2016, but this phone has almost (if not) all the specifications that the latest models of iPhone have. This iPhone has 4.7” retina HD display that displays bright and vibrant colours for the ease of the users. It has 12MP rear and 7MP FaceTime HD camera. Through these cameras you can capture your favourite moments in amazing qualities; also you can FaceTime your loved ones in HD quality.

Furthermore, iPhone 7 has fingerprint touch ID which makes it a securer iPhone to own and to keep your personal data in. It is water resistant up to 1m for up to 30 minutes, so if you have accidently dropped your iPhone 7 in water, you don’t have to worry about it being drenched and broken.

     iPhone 7 Plus:

This beast was launched along with iPhone 7 in 2016. Most of the people think that iPhone 7 Plus is just a bigger version of iPhone 7, but that isn’t the only difference between these two iPhones.

iPhone 7 Plus has 5.5” retina HD display, this display shows the colour quality same as that of iPhone 7. The biggest difference is that iPhone 7 Plus has 12MP dual rear cameras, these cameras include; 12MP wide-angle camera and 12MP telephoto camera. These cameras are same as the cameras of the latest models of iPhone. To be honest, these cameras take the best pictures when they capture anything simultaneously. It also has 7MP FaceTime HD camera through which you can take your selfies in good quality or you can FaceTime in HD quality.

It also has fingerprint touch ID and it is water resistant for 30 minutes up to 1m just like iPhone 7. The battery timing of this iPhone is although better than that of iPhone 7, as a bigger battery is installed in iPhone 7 Plus.

The two best Samsung phones that you can buy are:

     Samsung Galaxy S8:

Samsung launched this beautiful Smartphone in 2017. Apart from being the most beautiful phone ever launched by Samsung, this Smartphone possesses some of the most amazing features. S8 has 5.8”Quad HD+ Super AMOLED Infinity display with no button at the front of this phone, this means that the front of this phone only consists of a huge screen.

It has 8MP front camera, through which you can take amazing selfies and also video call in amazing quality. The rear camera is 12MP that captures your favourite moments in astonishing qualities. This phone has 4GB RAM that makes it a faster phone to use. It is water-resistant for 30 minutes up to 1.5m. S8 has fingerprint sensor embedded at the back of the phone, making it easier to use.

     Samsung Galaxy S8+:

Samsung Galaxy S8+ is the bigger version of the ever beautiful S8. It was launched along with S8, back in 2017. This phone possesses almost all of the specifications that S8 has, the only difference is that this phone is bigger in size; also it has a bigger 6.2” Quad HD+ Super AMOLED infinity display.

S8+ has better battery timing than S8, as it has a bigger battery installed in it. It has a fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone. Being at the back of the phone, the fingerprint sensor is easy to use.

Pre-owned or Refurbished?

Second-hand mobile phones are usually further categorized in two major categories; Pre-owned mobile phones and Second-hand mobile phones.

The pre-owned mobile phones are usually the mobile phones that peoplesell after using them for some time. These phones usually don’t have any major defects in them, but the body of the phone might be a little bit scratched from here and there.
