Cyber Monday (and Similar E-Commerce Events) Around the World

25 September

Thanksgiving & Cyber Monday is an internationally unique holiday celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States (or an equivalent holiday elsewhere in the world). There are a number of countries around the world that host super sales during that period.

  • Canada

A strong Canadian dollar pushes frugal Canadians into American stores offering irresistible Black Friday deals in the 2000s and early 2010s. Why would you drive across the border and deal with the potential headaches of Customs when you can get similar deals (minus shipping) from the comfort of your own home? By 2010, Canadian retailers began offering Cyber Monday deals as well, upping the holiday's popularity even though Canada's Thanksgiving is celebrated six weeks ahead of the US.

  • United Kingdom:

The U.K. In 2009, retailers began advertising Cyber Monday deals on the same day as the U.S. holiday. The UK now has a major online shopping day. Shopping season there has unofficially begun.

  • Germany:

The German Amazon subsidiary of Amazon (Amazon.de) advertised Cyber Monday sales on the same day as the US version in 2010. The Cyber Monday holiday. From the Monday before U.S. Thanksgiving until the Sunday after, Cyber Week is an eight-day celebration of the holiday. In the United States, Thanksgiving is celebrated.

  • Netherlands

It falls on December 5, the last Monday before Sinterklaas, the Netherlands' equivalent of Cyber Monday. The day is either the same as the U.S. The following week or Cyber Monday, depending on the calendar. It’s usually the most popular day of the Netherlands’ holiday shopping season.

  • India

Google India launched the Great Online Shopping Festival (GOSF) in 2012, a manufactured online shopping event conceived to jumpstart India's underdeveloped e-commerce ecosystem. A few weeks after U.S. Thanksgiving, GOSF is held each year on December 12. The day after Black Friday. A few hundred retailers participated in 2012, but 550 joined in 2014, including some of India's biggest sellers. There was no lasting happiness, however. The event was discontinued by Google India in 2015. We experienced a bittersweet moment. During the period between 2012 and 2015, Google India claimed that India's e-commerce sector had become so mature that it was no longer necessary to organize an Astroturf online shopping holiday.

  • Australia

The Australian equivalent of Cyber Monday, first run in 2012, is Click Frenzy. As the unofficial start of the country's holiday shopping season, it is held every third Tuesday of November. The company's Travel Frenzy offshoot runs each August and has been running since 2016.

  • China

On November 11, Singles Day is the granddaddy of single-day e-commerce blowouts. With the immense influence of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, Singles Day has evolved into the world's largest shopping holiday. Several times as much money was made on Singles Day that year as on Cyber Monday, as reported by Harvard Business Review in 2019.

Black Friday vs. Cyber Monday

  • Despite Cyber Monday's dominance, Black Friday may overtake it in the coming holiday shopping season, according to a recent study. Wikipedia reports that online sales topped $7.4 billion on Black Friday 2019, thanks to deep discounts from hundreds of major American retailers, such as Walmart, Best Buy, Apple, and Target.
  • Black Friday and Cyber Monday are they engaged in a competition for e-commerce orders? It's hard. Consumers are attracted to both days since they are both focused on holiday shopping: deal hunters.
  • Moreover, the first week of holiday shopping gets longer and longer every year. The Monday before Thanksgiving can represent the start of so-called Black Friday deals at some retailers. Even so, retailers aren't all supporting the Thanksgiving shopping trend.
  • On Small Business Saturday and as-yet-unnamed Sunday, two of Thanksgiving weekend's core days, shoppers flock to take advantage of one-day and carryover deals. Observers call the five-day period between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday, "Cyber Five," emphasizing the importance of every single day.
  • Perhaps we should rename Black Friday and Cyber Monday to Holiday Shopping Kickoff Week instead?
  • It's not quite ready yet. For now, let's just think about the two tentpole shopping days that occurred during the period.
